Sustainable Hydrogen Production from 100% Renewables

Abstract

On 17 January 2017 the thirteen leading energy, transport and industry companies in the World Economic Forum in Davos (Switzerland) have launched a global initiative, so-called: Hydrogen Council, to voice a united vision and long-term ambition for hydrogen to foster the energy transition. It aims to join the global efforts in promoting hydrogen to help meet climate goals. It is obvious that sustainable hydrogen production can only be achieved if this is coupled with 100% renewable energy sources. In this keynote presentation, a focus is primarily made on the 100% renewable energy based hydrogen production systems, particularly thorough thermochemical cycles and photoelectrochemical processes, and their developments, assessments and performance evaluations for various applications. Potential case studies and project results are presented to highlight the importance of sustainable hydrogen production methods for carbon-free economy. Furthermore, some comprehensive life cycle assessment results are presented to discuss the spectrums of various applications and implications.
