Permaculture: A Holistic Science to Design Sustainable Human Settlements
Abstract
Permaculture is an ethics-based design science to design sustainable human settlements. Initially developed as a collection of sustainable agriculture technics, it has soon become to cover all disciplines related to the human culture. The aim of the presentation is to explain the contribution of Permaculture to the sustainable design of human settlements. Starting with the brief analysis and definition of the major problems which impact the continuation of human race on earth; the holistic, solution-oriented approach of Permaculture will be described; major concepts and techniques of Permaculture design will be briefly explained.
Biographical Sketch
Dr. Murat Onuk is graduated from Boğaziçi University, Electrical and Electronics Department in 1991. He also received a double major diploma from Physics Department. Dr. Onuk completed his Master of Engineering degree in 1992, graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, Electric Power Engineering Department. Dr. Onuk completed the EMBA program of Koç University being the Valedictorian of Class ’98. Dr. Onuk received his PhD Degree from Yeditepe University Institute of Social Sciences in 2009 on Management and Organization track of Business Administration. Dr. Onuk worked in various positions in electrical industry concentrating mostly on power distribution, transmission and various forms of power generation. He made an important contribution to the development of wind power plants in Turkey. As of January 2016, Dr. Onuk is working as an Assistant Professor at Yeditepe University Department of Business Administration. Dr. Onuk is also a Permaculture designer, consultant and certified teacher; yoga instructor, a holistic life and executive coach.
