The Use of Renewable Energy in New and Existing Buildings

Abstract:

Energy utilization and the release of harmful emissions are among the global community’s principal concerns, especially relating to significant energy consuming systems, such as buildings. Buildings account for approximately 40% of the worldwide annual energy consumption (WBCSD 2009). Total global energy consumption in 2007 was about 500 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu), meaning the buildings sector consumed about 200 quadrillion Btu. According to the Energy Information Agency, worldwide energy consumption is expected to increase by about 1.4% per year through 2035, implying that buildings will consume about 300 quadrillion Btu by the year 2035 (EIA 2010). Therefore, the global community must urgently consider the transition from fossil-fuel based energy sources in buildings to renewable energy sources. This plenary talk will address such a transition, considering renewable energy sources suitable for new and existing buildings. Some case studies and research findings produced at the Thermal Processing Laboratory (TPL) at McMaster University, Canada considering the use of passive renewable energy systems for new and existing buildings will be presented and discussed.

 

Biography

Dr. Mohamed Hamed is a Full Professor of Mechanical Engineering and the Founding Director of the Thermal Processing Laboratory (TPL) at The Department of Mechanical Engineering, McMaster University, Canada. His research interests are in the Modeling of Thermal Processing Operations, Optimization of Energy Utilization in Industrial Processes, the Use of Renewable Energy in Net-Zero Energy Buildings, Boiling Heat Transfer, and the Modeling of Free-Surface Flows. His research involves laboratory scale experiments and numerical modelling techniques. His research contributions have been disseminated in more than 120 scientific publications, books, and patents. Dr. Hamed has taught several undergraduate and graduate courses: Fluid Mechanics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Modeling of Thermal Processes, Advanced Fluid Mechanics. He has developed a number of technical courses for practicing engineers in the areas of Optimization of Energy Efficiencies in Industrial Processes, Advanced Energy Management, Renewable Energy Systems, and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. Dr. Hamed is a Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, Canada and a Member of different professional societies such as: CSME, ASME, ASM Heat Treating Society, SME, ASHRAE, and CFD Society of Canada.  He is an Associate Editor and an Editorial Board Member of various National and International journals: Transactions of the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineers (CSME), The International Journal of Microstructure and Materials Properties (IJMMP), The International Journal of Computational Thermal Sciences, Journal of Materials Performance and Characterization, and The International Journal of Electronics Cooling and Thermal Control. He is also a reviewer in more than thirty technical international journals and funding agencies.
